Adrenal Cortex Cancer – DNA Triage Test

Pioneering work is the trademark of this research which, for the first time on this planet, carries out a large scale DNA test for the detection of genetic mutation caused by the development of a certain type of cancer. Its motivation is the fact that Paraná is the state to present the largest world incidence of such pathology, which can be 18 times larger than in other countries. Nowadays, the cure rate of patients presenting this type of cancer is that of 50%. The research carried out in the Pelé Pequeno Príncipe allows for increasing this rate at 95%.

The research also counts on the sponsorship of the Science and Technology State Secretariat and encompasses 486 public and private maternity wards in Paraná.

Objectives of this research:

  • Diminish the levels of child mortality owing to adrenal cortex cancer;
  • Detect the genetic mutation associated to the tendency and to the development of the cancer;
  • Follow-up and offer early treatment to the children who present such mutation and the development of the tumor.

Rates of the illness in Paraná and São Paulo:

  • 18 times higher than in the rest of the world.
  • One child out of every 1,500 children born presents such a mutation.
  • One out of ten children presenting the tumor develops it.

Partners:

  • 486 maternity wards;
  • 399 Municipal Health Secretariats;
  • The Paranaense Pediatrics Society;
  • Children’s and Adolescents’ Rights and Health State Council;
  • Tutelary Councils;
  • Obstetricians;
  • Pediatricians.
